Let’s look at a familiar
passage from Matthew 11:28-30 where Jesus said,
Come to me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you
rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble of
heart, and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden
is light.
Things to think about:
- Jesus
bids us to come. It is an active choice on our part that we must move
towards him.
- Is
it ever easier or harder for you to come to Him? What kinds of situations
or feelings influence this?
- Jesus
is looking for the weary and heavy laden.
- Do you
know what that feels like?
- How
would you describe a time in your life (even now) where that was the
case?
- He
promises rest to those who will exchange their heavy burden for his light
one.
- What is
it about His yoke that makes it light?
- What is
it about our yoke that makes it heavy?
- He
says we must learn from Him.
- If you
had to be very specific, what would you say you have learned from Jesus?
- What do
you hope Jesus teaches you in the next few months?
- He
encourages us in this by reminding us He is gentle and humble of heart.
- When we
don’t know something, we can either feel judged by others or very
foolish.
- Learning
doesn’t always happen upon the first hearing so his gentleness and
humility aren’t just for new believers.
- What is
one lesson that has taken a while to sink in for you?
- What
encouragement would you offer someone based on your personal experience?
