Is the Yoke on You?

Let’s look at a familiar passage from Matthew 11:28-30 where Jesus said,
Come to me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Things to think about:
  • Jesus bids us to come. It is an active choice on our part that we must move towards him.
    • Is it ever easier or harder for you to come to Him? What kinds of situations  or feelings influence this?
  • Jesus is looking for the weary and heavy laden.
    • Do you know what that feels like?
    • How would you describe a time in your life (even now) where that was the case?
  • He promises rest to those who will exchange their heavy burden for his light one.
    • What is it about His yoke that makes it light?
    • What is it about our yoke that makes it heavy?
  • He says we must learn from Him.
    • If you had to be very specific, what would you say you have learned from Jesus?
    • What do you hope Jesus teaches you in the next few months?
  • He encourages us in this by reminding us He is gentle and humble of heart.
    • When we don’t know something, we can either feel judged by others or very foolish.
    • Learning doesn’t always happen upon the first hearing so his gentleness and humility aren’t just for new believers.
    • What is one lesson that has taken a while to sink in for you?
  • What encouragement would you offer someone based on your personal experience?
